The War Within: America's Battle over Vietnam
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (April, 1994)
Authors: Tom Wells and Todd Gitlin
Average review score:

A balanced and insightful look at American society
I was glad to see that Wells took the time to present a balanced perspective that took into account the political backgrounds of all parties involved in the events surrounding the Vietnam War. There are some great interviews which allow some behind-the-scene looks at what both sides were thinking and planning during the war era.

Webster's New World Vocabulary of Success
Published in Paperback by Webster's New World (June, 1998)
Authors: Mike Miller and William R. Todd-Mancillas
Average review score:

Extremely Helpful!
This book is an excellent guide to building your vocabulary. The fact that it departmentalizes words into common topic areas is extremely helpful. This is great primarily because it allows readers to better understand the context of the words being learned. Many of the words presented may be familiar to the average person, however, I feel that this helps to make the learning process alot smoother in that it doesn't pressure the reader into feeling he or she should learn so much at one time.

Why Do I Keep Doing That
Published in Paperback by Centennial Photo (February, 2003)
Author: Todd M. Berntson
Average review score:

Fresh Take On a Familiar Problem
If you have ever asked yourself "Why Do I Keep Doing That", check out this book. Being a self-help reading junkie, I thought I knew every theory out there regarding this topic. However, I was really surprised at the fresh take Dr. Berentson had on why we engage in behaviors that are destructive. I think Dr. Berentson's personal story is quite inspiring and frankly I'd love to know more of his journey. After reading the book, I personally I found I was able to take more decisive action in solving problems while exhibiting judgment and a realistic understanding of issues and ability to use reason, even when dealing with emotional topics. It's well written and easy to read. Enjoy!

Will Technology Really Change Education? : From Blackboard to Web
Published in Hardcover by Corwin Press (January, 1999)
Authors: Todd W. Kent and Robert McNergney
Average review score:

Technology will change education!
The question in the title is very intriguing. The authors did a very good job at looking at expectations and reality. They continued with the discussion of the historical context, what is currently going on, and then looking towards the future of Educational Technology. The authors of the book continue to be free-thinking in the use of technology in the educational field.

This book focuses on the influence of higher education on technology and learning. Many references to standards and accredited organizations were referenced in the book. The references help put in context the ideas of change in perspective with reasons that they are needed. One sentence in the whole book struck me as an area of intrigue, "Good ideas, not necessarily new technological developments, guide the way." All educators need to model the integration of technology and not as a standalone activity. Teacher Education departments were especially emphasized in creating change in the modeling if infused, transparent technology. The intent is to allow the technology to be secondary to the primary function of education.

Patterns of change in technology were emphasized in the book. The acceptance of technology appears to depend on the degree in which it demonstrates pedagogical flexibility, supports teacher control, and is accessible. The authors mentioned film, radio, and television and compared them with the technologies in education today.

As the book looks into the future, it referenced how educators must be able to make informed decisions in choosing the appropriate media for the given instructional tasks. Kent and McNergney infuse the book with excellent real-world examples as well as how future technologies will help change the classroom setting.

I would highly suggest this book to others who are looking for suggestions as to how educators can best proceed to take advantage of technology in the future.

Wire Song

Finally a full-length collection
Finally, a collection of Mark Todd's poetry has been published! I first read his works in the classic collection of Colorado western slope poetry titled "Geography of Hope." Ever since, I have hoped for a full-length collection. It has finally arrived and what a collection it is. Todd lives among the incomparable landscape of the Colorado Rockies near Gunnison, Colorado. He writes in a manner that chronicles and respects the geographical region while at the same time his verse is so powerful that he transcends region and speaks to the heart regardless of where you live. His pose "The Doyleville Schoolhouse" is one of my favorites. His reminiscences of the old schoolhouse and it's importance to the farmers and ranchers is a reminder that "Some traditions run deeper than concrete." In fact, "the where can sometimes tell us who we are." The poem titled "Passages" will give the reader a flavor for his observations of the land he calls home: "These back-road passages still guide the lost wanderers, No matter the distance of the journey called home." The book contains forty-one poems dealing with the weather, friends, animals, family, tragedy, humor, the land and a host of other subjects related to "...the country here-abouts..." that portrays the reality of a landscape that will speak to the reader where ever they reside. Wallace Stegner said "No place is a place until it has had a poet." With this publication of Wire Song the western slope of Colorado, indeed the entire state, has a first rate poet. Conundrum Press continues their high standards with this book.

A Romance in Occupied Norway
A touching tale of a woman who is cut off from her seaman husband during the bleak years of the Nazi occupation of Norway. A handsome officer is billeted in her house and as the two become familiar with one another, barriers fall. There are scenes of everyday life in the town during that gray period when there were shortages of food and goods and a picture of the clandestine resistance activities. The portraits of the main characters are sensitively drawn and the writing includes historical accounts of the war in Europe and on the Eastern front.

World of Money Allowance Kit!: A Hands-On Money Management System Exclusively for Kids!
Published in Paperback by Summit Financial Products Inc (May, 1997)
Authors: Michael J. Searls, Summit Financial Products, and Todd Clary
Average review score:

A great tool for teaching kids about money!
I wish this kit had been available when I was a child! The kit is a 3-compartment bank, colorful, eye-catching and fun, with lots of stickers. The tape is helpful in getting started and the children (8 and 5) are both truly learning about Spending, Saving and Investing. They have learned to divide all money they receive - allowance, birthday and "tooth fairy" money - into those three categories. They can see how fast savings can add up and how fast spending money goes! Parents who want to teach their children the value of handling money wisely will start them on this kit early. My 5 year old is the proud owner of one share of Disney now and, while he doesn't understand it totally, he does know that he saved that portion of his money for a while and can now say he owns a little piece of Winnie the Pooh! The concept is sinking in and that is the premise of the kit, helping children understand about money.
